Los Angeles, Ca: Round 7 of the 2016 AMA West Hare Scrambles championship doubled round 4 of the AMA ATV West Championship this past weekend, hosted by Roadrunners Off-Road Club in southern California. Known for its large ATV and UTV audience, Superstition Mountain saw an impressive turn out for the ATV and UTV classes!

In what marked the largest ATV event in 2016, Saturday’s competition was packed with talent. Coming into the weekend, Colt Brinkerhoff looked to wrap up both the 2016 AMA WHS ATV Championship, as well as the dual-series (WHS and NHHA) ATV West Championship. The green flag waved and the first row took off onto the 17-mile course that included sand dunes, rocky trails and fast flowing washes. With an average of 30-minute lap times, Oscar Ruiz charged to the front of the field and focused on building his gap between second place rider Juan Sanchez. Meanwhile, Brinkerhoff suffered from mechanical difficulties on lap one, forcing him to pull out of the race.

Christopher Avalos paced his race, and focused on Sanchez, looking to capitalize on any mistakes he could make. Eventually on lap three, he made the pass on Sanchez for 2nd overall. Kyle McDaniel and Carlos Valencia swapped positions throughout the race to finish 4th and 5th respectively overall. Although Brinkerhoff’s race ended shortly, he was able to wrap up not just the West Hare Scramble Championship, but also the National Hare and Hound Championship which earned him the grand title of AMA West ATV Champion. Congratulations Colt on a job well done! We still look forward to seeing you at the NHHA finale in just a few weeks.
